6 simple steps from old registrar to SylhetHost

ICANN-mandated domain transfer process, simplified. We walk you through every step, handle the boring parts (EPP codes, FOA emails, registry handshake), and keep you posted at every status change.

1

Unlock at old registrar

Log in to your current registrar's panel and disable the transfer lock (also called "registrar lock" or "domain lock"). This is a security feature that prevents unauthorized transfers — you have to turn it off intentionally.

1 min
2

Request EPP auth code

Find the "Authorization Code" / "EPP Code" / "Transfer Key" option in your old registrar's panel. Click to request it — they'll email it to the registrant contact on file. The code is 8–16 characters and valid for 7–14 days.

5–30 min
3

Submit to SylhetHost

Paste your domain + EPP code on our transfer page. We verify the code format, check the domain's transfer eligibility at the registry in real-time, and confirm pricing — all before you pay a dime.

2 min
4

Approve via FOA email

ICANN requires explicit approval. Both you (the registrant) and your old registrar receive a Formal Confirmation of Transfer (FOA) email. You click "Approve"; your old registrar either approves or stays silent (auto-approve after 5 days).

1 hour – 5 days
5

Registry hands over

The registry (Verisign for .com, PIR for .org, etc.) moves the domain from your old registrar's account to ours. DNS records, website, and email stay live throughout — the move is invisible to your visitors. We monitor the handshake in real-time.

5–7 days total
6

Domain live + 1yr extended

Your domain now shows SylhetHost as the registrar in WHOIS. The registration extends by 1 year from the current expiry date — you don't lose any paid time. DNS, hosting, email: all untouched. Welcome aboard.

Done

Three paths after renewal — only one ends well

When your domain's renewal notice arrives, you have three choices. Here's what each one actually delivers, beyond the marketing copy.

Renew at Old Registrar

The default path — usually the most expensive

You keep the same slow DNS, the same paywalled WHOIS privacy, the same upsells. Renewal price is often 30–50% higher than what you paid at registration. You're paying for the privilege of staying unhappy.

  • Renewal price 30–50% higher than intro
  • Slow DNS, no anycast
  • WHOIS privacy = $9.99/yr extra
  • SSL sold separately ($50+/yr)
  • Email-only support, 24h+ replies
  • No transfer work required

Let It Expire

The worst option — don't do this

If you let the domain expire, it enters a 30-day grace period (recoverable for a fee), then a 30-day redemption period (~$80 restore fee), then it drops to public registration. Domain squatters watch expiring domains and grab them within seconds.

  • Lose the domain identity you built
  • SEO / Google ranking resets to zero
  • Email stops working immediately
  • Squatters may grab it within seconds
  • Recovery costs $80+ if even possible
  • Brand damage, broken links, lost customers

Transparent transfer fees — one year added to your registration

Transfer cost = renewal price. ICANN mandates that every successful transfer extends the domain registration by 1 year from the current expiry date. You don't lose any paid time — you gain a year.

Anycast DNS (18 PoPs)

Sub-10ms DNS resolution globally. 100% SLA. Unlimited records. Switch your DNS to ours (or keep using Cloudflare / your host's DNS — your call).

Zero Downtime Guarantee

The transfer only moves the registration — not your hosting, not your DNS records, not your email. Your visitors see nothing change.

Registry-level transfer lock re-enabled automatically. Account-wide two-factor auth (TOTP, hardware key, or SMS) on by default.

Email Forwarding

Forward you@yourdomain.com to Gmail / Outlook / ProtonMail. Unlimited forwarders, spam-filtered, free with every transfer.

  • DNS Version History — 30-day rollback on any record change
  • 24/7 Threat Monitoring — SOC team + auto-incident response

Tick these off before you initiate the transfer

Most transfer failures happen because the domain is locked, the contact email is outdated, or the domain was transferred / registered too recently. Run through this 6-point checklist first — we'll show your readiness in real-time.

Transfer Readiness Checklist

Click each item as you complete it. Get to 6/6 = ready to transfer.

0 of 6 completed Not ready yet
  • Domain is at least 60 days old ICANN prohibits transfers within 60 days of initial registration. Check the creation date in your current registrar's panel or via WHOIS.
  • Not transferred in the last 60 days ICANN also prohibits transfers within 60 days of a previous transfer. If you moved the domain recently, you'll need to wait out the window.
  • Registrant email is up to date The FOA (Formal Confirmation of Transfer) email goes to the registrant contact email on file with your current registrar. If you can't receive that email, you can't approve the transfer. Verify it in WHOIS before starting.
  • Transfer lock is OFF at old registrar Log in to your current registrar's panel and find the "Transfer Lock" / "Registrar Lock" toggle. Turn it OFF. If you can't find it, search their help docs for "unlock domain".
  • EPP auth code in hand Request the EPP / Authorization / Transfer key from your current registrar. They'll email it to the registrant contact. The code is valid for 7–14 days, so don't request it too early.
  • DNS is hosted elsewhere (optional but recommended) If your old registrar hosts your DNS, switch to ours (or Cloudflare, or your hosting provider's DNS) BEFORE starting the transfer. This ensures zero downtime during the move.

Everything you need to know about domain transfers

Real answers from our transfer team. Don't see your question? Hit the chat bubble — a transfer specialist replies in <5 min, 24/7.

How long does a domain transfer take? +

The standard ICANN-mandated transfer window is 5–7 calendar days from the moment you submit a valid EPP code and approve the FOA email. The breakdown:

  • FOA approval by you (the registrant): usually within 1 hour of receiving the email
  • Old registrar release: 1–5 days (they have a 5-day auto-approve window)
  • Registry handshake: instant once the old registrar releases

For .bd / .com.bd transfers via BTCL, the process is manual and can take 7–14 days because BTCL requires physical / signed authorization forms.

Will my website go down during the transfer? +

No — if your DNS is hosted separately from your old registrar. The transfer only moves the registration (who you pay), not your hosting, not your DNS records, not your email. As long as your DNS points at the right servers during the move, your visitors see nothing change.

If your old registrar currently hosts your DNS, switch to ours (or Cloudflare, or your hosting provider's DNS) before starting the transfer. This takes 5–10 minutes and ensures zero downtime.

What's an EPP auth code and where do I get it? +

The EPP auth code (also called "Authorization Code", "Transfer Key", "Domain Secret", or "EPP Key") is an 8–16 character string that proves you own the domain. ICANN requires it for every gTLD transfer.

To get it, log in to your current registrar's panel and look for one of:

  • GoDaddy: Domain » Settings » Authorization Code (emailed to registrant)
  • Namecheap: Domain List » Manage » Sharing & Transfer » Auth Code
  • Google Domains: (migrated to Squarespace) — Settings » Transfer settings » Auth code
  • Cloudflare: Domain » Overview » Transfer » Get auth code

The code is valid for 7–14 days. If you don't use it in time, request a fresh one.

My transfer was rejected — why? +

The 4 most common rejection reasons:

  • Domain is locked — you forgot to disable the transfer lock at your old registrar. Fix: unlock, retry.
  • Wrong EPP code — typo, or the code expired. Fix: request a fresh code, paste exactly.
  • FOA not approved — the registrant email bounced or you ignored it. Fix: update registrant email, re-initiate.
  • Within 60-day window — registered or transferred in last 60 days. Fix: wait out the window.

If you don't know which one applied, our transfer team will query the registry on your behalf and tell you exactly what to fix. Just open a chat with your domain name.

Do I lose any paid registration time when I transfer? +

No — you actually gain a year. ICANN mandates that every successful transfer extends the domain registration by 1 year from the current expiry date. So if your domain expires on March 15, 2026, after a successful transfer it will expire on March 15, 2027.

The transfer fee IS the cost of that 1-year extension. There's no separate "transfer fee" + renewal — it's all one bundled price.

Can I transfer a .bd / .com.bd domain? +

Yes, but the process is different from gTLDs:

  • .bd and .com.bd transfers go through BTCL (Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited), the registry operator.
  • BTCL requires a signed transfer authorization form + NID / trade license copy.
  • Process typically takes 7–14 days (vs 5–7 for gTLDs).
  • BTCL charges a transfer fee equal to a 1-year renewal — same as gTLD.

We handle the entire BTCL submission for you. Just provide the documents during checkout and we'll do the rest.

What happens to my email / Gmail Workspace when I transfer? +

Nothing changes — your email keeps working. The transfer only moves the registration; it doesn't touch your MX records (which tell other servers where to deliver email for your domain).

However, if your old registrar hosted your email (some bundle email with domains), you need to set up email forwarding or migrate to Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 / Zoho before transferring. Our team will help you set this up — just ask in chat.

Can I cancel a transfer after submitting it? +

Yes, but with restrictions:

  • Before FOA approval: cancel instantly in our panel, full refund within 24 hours.
  • After FOA approval, before old registrar releases: contact our support team — we can request cancellation at the registry, but it's not guaranteed (depends on old registrar's process).
  • After registry hands over: too late — the transfer is complete. You can transfer back to the old registrar if you want, but you'd pay another transfer fee.

Best practice: only initiate when you're sure. Use the bulk eligibility check first to validate everything.

Do you offer bulk transfer discounts? +

Yes — here's the discount ladder on transfer fees:

  • 5–24 domains: 10% off each transfer fee
  • 25–99 domains: 20% off + dedicated migration manager
  • 100+ domains: 30% off + white-glove concierge (we contact your old registrars on your behalf)
  • 500+ domains: custom pricing — email resellers@sylhethost.com for a quote

Discounts apply automatically at checkout based on the number of domains in your transfer cart.

What if my old registrar refuses to release the domain? +

ICANN rules say your old registrar must release the domain within 5 days of FOA approval, unless you explicitly rejected the transfer or the domain is in a 60-day window. If they stall beyond 5 days without cause, that's an ICANN violation.

If this happens:

  • Open a chat with our transfer team — we'll contact the old registrar on your behalf.
  • If they still refuse, we file a formal Transfer Dispute Resolution Policy (TDRP) complaint with the registry.
  • As a last resort, we escalate to ICANN Compliance — this almost always resolves within 48 hours.

We've handled thousands of transfers. We know the rules and we'll fight for your domain if your old registrar plays games.

Will my Google ranking / SEO be affected? +

No — a transfer has zero SEO impact. Google doesn't track (or care about) which registrar holds your domain registration. What matters for SEO is:

  • Domain stays live (zero downtime — guaranteed if DNS is hosted elsewhere)
  • SSL stays active (we issue a new Let's Encrypt cert within 60 seconds of transfer)
  • URLs stay the same (no redirect chains)
  • Page load speed stays fast (our anycast DNS is often faster than your old registrar's DNS)

In fact, many customers see a small SEO boost after transferring to us, simply because our anycast DNS resolves faster globally than the old registrar's basic DNS.
